Saxophone Section Poster
I created this collage-inspired poster to capture the wacky and chaotic nature of the Spirit of Houston saxophone section. Using a mix of photographic and graphic elements along with aspects of the University of Houston brand guidelines, my goal was to create a fun and interesting poster that captures what it was like to be in the section, both in feeling and memory.
Some of the easter eggs explained:
All members of the section would point at passing airplanes until they were out of sight during outdoor rehearsals.
Every year during Spirit Week, one of the lunches would be provided by Cane’s. It was tradition to stack the lunch boxes as high as possible to see if we could beat our past year’s record before the tower fell. Stacking the boxes was a team effort which often included the usage of the drum major’s ladder.
Occasionally, a random object, such as a potato, would be passed along our section during indoor rehearsals, and each member would try to add something to it. As a bonus, we would also try to bring this object to outdoor rehearsals and either store it in the bells of our saxophones or pass it to one another while marching.
Sigma Alpha Chi is our fictional saxophone section fraternity, which spells out SAX.
The Houston skyline is not only a prominent part of the Spirit of Houston as a whole but it can be seen clearly from TDECU stadium.
